Looking for "jazz" bass

Hey guys, I hope I don't start a flame war here...

I'm a jazz/fusion guitarist looking to pick up a bass to use for
recording. I would like a 4 or 5 string with ash body, maple neck,
rosewood or ebony board and quiet pickups. Fretless would be cool but
I'm not sure I'd be able to dedicate enough time to play it in tune so
I should probably stick to fretted.

I really like the Willis bass and I used to own a Japanese Fender Power
Jazz that was cool.

I'm also not much into the quilted, 10-top thing that seems to have
become popular just because the ones that I like the tone of seem to be
solid ash but I'm open to suggestions.

What would you guys recommend under $1000 ?

LOL! Well, I don't think you're in any danger of getting
recommendations for "10-top" basses at the $1000 pricepoint!

I know Carol Kaye likes the Ibanez SRX-700, much more than recent Fender
basses from anywhere. It does have active electronics though, I believe. I
know from the other newsgroup you have had positive experience with the
Ibanez electric guitars; I found the fit and finish of the bass I looked at
comparable. I can't tell you about the tone or how it plays because I don't
play bass!

I bought a short-scale to double on and customized it until it sounded very
nice with flatwounds, brite flats, or half-rounds. Stretches are easier for
a guitar player, and the depth of the windings won't feel as different. You
might like a more mid tone, though, for your style of music.

I had a friend who used to take frets out and replace them with abalone or
mother-of-pearl for Bill Wyman. Nowadays I recall seeing a model or two
manufactured this way.

Which short scale did you get?

Which short scale did you get?
Oh Lord, I almost hate to admit it. There was no Fender Mustang reissue at
the time, 1991, and that was before the days of Internet shopping, and the
only short-scale I could find was a 30" Series 10 at a local store. I don't
know if they even make 'em anymore. I ended up having to replace the
plastic nut, which broke because of the string angle to the head, with a
bone nut, and the P-Bass-style pickups with Fender Lace Sensors, so I
probably spent more on getting it right than I paid for it in the first
place; but what the hell, it's sweet now. The neck is thin and easy to play
but is more prone to deflection than a thicker one. Last time I got it out
of the shop after a neck set (and that was from going to flatwounds from
half-rounds), I heard a couple of very competent black guys trying out an
amp in the store and showed it to them. They couldn't believe how good it
sounded, started slapping and popping it too; and I had to pry it out of
their hands to go to my appointment. Though I now have a long-scale and am
getting used to the distances on it, I think it's easier to drop down to a
short-scale once used to a 34" than to go in the other direction. A guitar
player bandleader friend of mine who runs his own studio has to provide bass
tracks a lot of times and uses a short scale to do that. It's just less of
a stretch, literally, to use guitar skills on a short-scale.

How's the Lakland 44-01? I assume it's made in Korea but on paper it looks
like what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, I'd have to try/buy through
musicians friend.

I don't think Lakland makes anything that is crap. I also suggest looking
into a G&L as they make a fine bass. I would pick up a used bass on eBay
and you may be able to get the real thing (American) for under 1G.

Cort Josh Paul Signature (if you don't mind the quilted top).
